Background:

Opened in 1977 to serve the villages of Kirkbride and Newton Arlosh. Open plan building set in extensive grounds. The two villages populated by commuters to Carlisle and Wigton, although agriculture is the basic local employer. School now has nursery provision for four-year-olds, and has revamped exterior play space and accommodation to enhance provision. Information Technology suite is used by people in the community for training as well as the children. Other adult education courses are held at the school. Wildlife area and pond at the rear of school grounds; there are outside flower beds which children plant and keep free of weeds. Pupils also run a Pot Professional business from a greenhouse. Sporting achievements include winning the area netball trophy in 1998 and rounders trophy in 1999. Clubs run every night after school to improve sporting and cultural achievements. These include a recorder ensemble, art club and ICT club (14 networked PCs for the internet and video conferencing). French offered to children in years 5 and 6; residential visits to London and Lake District. 'Lively' Parent-Teacher Association supports the school. Not over-subscribed.
