Background:
Bewcastle is a small rural school, which was founded on its current site in 1878. New classrooms were added in 1965 and an open swimming pool in 1974. The school prides itself on producing 'enthusiastic, confident pupils who can cope with moving from such a small school to a much larger one'. The small numbers of pupils allow teachers to monitor and evaluate their individual needs and 'rectify any problems'. A teaching assistant provides literacy and learning support to pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
