Background:
Appelby Primary School was founded in 1911 in a market town serving a rural community. The buildings are 'well-maintained' and contain a new, purpose built early years unit for nursery and reception children. The school has 'spacious' grounds with room for two football pitches. Extra-curricular activities include a chess club, recorder groups, football, netball, cricket, rugby groups, short tennis lessons and table tennis groups. The school takes part in local sporting tournaments on a regular basis and, supported by an active Parent, Teacher and Friends Association, is involved in many community events. This year it opened a community development centre which offers adult training facilities with the purpose of developing the local economy.
