Background:
Founded in the 1870s, the school's present building retains many of the original features. It has benefited from a continuing programme of updating and upgrading, which has resulted in the school's current well-laid-out, spacious accommodation which offers excellent facilities. The school overlooks Hadrian's Wall which runs along the perimeter of the school grounds, and is located in the village of Gilsland, which straddles the Cumbria/Northumberland border. It serves a wide geographical area. In addition to children from local villages, it is pleased to admit pupils from the wider community and draws pupils from up to 11 miles away, many pupils crossing the county border to attend. In order to develop pupils' perceptions of the wider word, the school maintains links with other schools in the UK via letters, e-mail and visits.
