Background:
The school opened in 1960 with eight classrooms and a hall, and is situated in grounds which offer large areas of open space and trees in a small market town. An additional building includes a learning support room, disabled toilets and a new library/resource area. All pupils have their own e-mail addresses and send letters throughout the world. Extra-curricular activities include football, netball, atheletics, choir and dry slope skiing. The school has 'regular' charity fund raising events, which are chosen by the pupils. The pupils elect a school council of eight pupils to meet weekly with the headteacher to discuss issues such as discipline, events, organisational matters, school equipment and bullying. Pupils take part in 'many' outside visits, including residential excursions to the Lake District for sailing, climbing and other outdoor activities, as well as going on trips abroad to Holland, Belgium and Germany.
