Background:
Newbourns is large primary in the suburbs of Barrow, where the catchment area is 'extremely varied'. It has been in existence since 1994 when separate infant and junior schools were amalgamated. The buildings were originally opened in 1951 but remodelling in 1993 has enhanced many of the facilities and the security of the grounds. Facilities include technology areas, a dark room, a kiln, music and drama rooms, two libraries, and quiet areas for special needs tuition. Outside, a pond and environmental area contribute to the 'outstanding environment'. The over-subscribed school offers 'curriculum enrichment' for children of above average ability. A school council 'operates effectively' and there are regular sporting and musical successes. The school choir has featured on Cumbria Radio and entertains at retirement homes. 'The school aims to create a caring, purposeful and stable atmosphere which enables all the staff, parents, governers and the community to work together, ensuring that every child is encouraged to realise their full potential'.
