Background:

Longtown Junior School was remodelled in 1975 from the existing infant and junior schools. It is a 'solid spacious' group of buildings consisting of three double units each comprising one class, plus three single cell classrooms. The school has its own kitchen and 'direct' access to Longtown Community Library. There are three tarmac play areas, a quiet enclosed garden and a 'large' playing field. From September 1998, there has been an ICT suite which is also used as Longtown's Community Development Centre. The school'shares a campus with the infant school and secondary school. The school has a mix of pupils from various backgrounds (council tenants/private housing), and a number of pupils from rural backgrounds. The school offers a 'broad, balanced and challanging' curriculum, that 'encompasses all aspects' of the national curriculum. Cross-curricular links between subjects are also encouraged. The school offers a 'range' of extra-curricular activities which include learning to play a musical instrument such as the recorder, guitar or violin; football, cross counrty, cricket, rounders and netball clubs; and ICT. The school also takes pupils on educational trips throughout the year, which are usually linked to work projects in individual classes. The school is committed to 'creating opportunities to enable all children to succeed by generating feelings of self-worth and mutual respect and also to ensure that there are equal opportunities for all pupils'.
