Background:
Newton County Primary has served the needs of the local community since 1915. Extensions and refurbishments have been added to the buildings over the years. Class sizes range from 15 to 30, with teacher assistants in most classes. A special needs teacher works with children individually and in small groups in a 'well-equipped resource room'. Parents are welcomed into school to offer any skills they might have, or simply to help. There are also courses for adults in the school's parent-community room during the day. A school council, composed of Year 6 pupils, helps to look after younger children at lunchtimes. Extra-curricular activities vary from year to year but have recently included football club, netball training, theatre group visits, music making activities, computer club, educational visits and an outdoor experience holiday for older children. The Sunrise Club is available every morning from 8.15am for children whose parents are busy or working.
