Background:
Founded by royal charter in 1564; moved into new building on edge of town at the end of the First World War; buildings extended in 1937 and 1958; became grant-maintained in 1992; changed from 13-18 to 11-18 grammar in 1993. Since then, new facilities developed for design and technology, ICT, science, mathematics, sport and English. Sixth form accommodated in neighbouring annexe; extensive playing fields adjacent to school. Serves large catchment area extending 400 square miles and including eastern Lake District. Offers 22 A-levels including geology, economics and environmental science. Rugby and cross-country especially strong; Young Enterprise offered, usually involving two companies each year. Lessons in science, ICT, and PE for pupils from feeder primary schools. Pupils raise funds for charities of their choice. Over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. Beacon status (2001); DfES school achievement award (2001, 2002). Ethos: 'Happy and businesslike in its efforts to get the best for and from its pupils'.
