Background:

Opened in 1982, Silloth Primary is housed in a modern, purpose built facility. The school has 'spacious' grounds and playing fields and is situated by the sea on the Solway Firth. A new computer suite opened in 1999, followed by a nursery extension in 2000. There are 'excellent' sporting facilities and the school has recently reached county finals in rugby, tennis, football and cricket. All these sports and netball, cross country and chess are also offered as extra-curricular activities. Dance is a particular strength of the school and in design and technology, children have recently completed a millennium mosaic and cairn. The school holds the BNFL technology prize and has piloted the local education authority's information and communication technology (ICT) certification scheme. A computer centre is located within the school, which provides evening courses for the local community. There is a special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator and five SEN support staff and all staff are trained in completing individual education programmes. Specialist reading intervention teaching and literacy support are available. The school generally receives more applications than the number of places available.
