Background:
Founded in 1884 and moved to its present site in 1908. Originally a girl's school, it built up an enviable reputation throughout the north of the country. In became a mixed comprehensive in 1970, grant maintained in 1992 and a foundation school in 1999. In 2001 it achieved sports college status and a half a million pound lottery grant has enabled it to upgrade its sports facilities in its community sports complex including a swimming pool, gym and grass tennis courts. Extra-curricular activities vary, and usually include choirs, netball, cricket, metalwork, tennis, fitness training, swimming, hockey, badminton, cross-country, computing, soccer, chess, gymnastics, athletics, rugby, dance, film club, squash and orchestra. The school aims to provide a safe and pleasant environment for effective learning.
