Background:
The school became co-educational in 1897, and the old sandstone buildings were added to in 1960, giving extra classrooms on the limited hillside site. The school has a panoramic view of both St Bees Head and the Irish Sea. The village itself is a small, close-knit and busy community that is supportive of the school. Close links with the local area and churches, whose facilities are used for performances to which everyone is invited. Pupils have also been involved in the restoration of gardens for a children's respite home, from the fundraising to the planting of trees and plants. Computer skills have a prevalence in the curriculum and all juniors get one session each week in the busienss school of a local independent school, to which many pupils transfer after scholarship examinations. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5.30pm. Activemark.
