Background:
The school is housed in its original Victorian building and in more recent, modern classrooms. In the past three years, it has benefited from 'considerable investment and refurbishment'. The urban school does not have its own field but has the use of facilities at Carlisle College of Art nearby. Stanwix Primary aims to 'offer a balanced curriculum and achieve the highest possible standards for each individual pupil'. Extra-curricular activities are a 'strength of the school' and currently include art, choir, orchestra, rugby, soccer, tennis, badminton and running, with cricket and rounders in summer. The school is proud of its recent success in the inter-school citizenship quiz competition and in rugby, cricket and cross country. In 1999, the choir produced a commercial CD, and regularly sings for charitable organisations including performances in the Cathedral for national charities. The school has 'strong links' with the community and helped to establish the adjacent community centre and the Stanwix Playgroup.
