Background:

Founded in 1860, Langdale Primary is a small, two-class school in the Lake District's 'beautiful' Langdale Valley. It is set in 'extensive' grounds which include mature beech woodland and serves the communities of Little Langdale, Colwith, Skelwith, High Close, Loughrigg and Great Langdale. The school aims to promote a 'caring Christian attitude and create a friendly and supportive environment in which children can be educated'. It 'has a reputation for providing excellent academic standards in a caring and supportive atmosphere'. The 'broad' curriculum is based on the core subjects of the National Curriculum, and there is a comprehensive policy on special educational needs (SEN). Basic French and Spanish is taught to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Athletics and games (soccer, rugby, skittleball, unihoc and cricket) are taught in the school grounds, on a hard playground and a grassed field for sport. Indoor gymnastics and dance are taught in the village hall while swimming takes place at the local timeshare pool. All pupils are given the opportunity during Key Stage 1 to begin to learn to play the recorder. In Years 5 and 6, pupils may be invited to learn to play a woodwind instrument. The school has 'close links' with the parish church and three special services are held in church each year. The school is not required to publish SAT results due to its small cohorts. For example, in 2000/01 only three children are taking KS2 SATs.
