Background:
On January 12th 2000, the school celebrated its bicentenary, having been founded in 1800 as Plumbland Free Grammar School by a sea captain named John Sibson. The original building contains two spacious classrooms and a clock tower, and a third classroom, cloakrooms and a kitchen were added later. The school'stands in its own grounds in a quiet, rural location on the corner of Parsonby Green. There is a large tar-paved playground and an area of grass and gardens for pupils to use. The small school now serves several local villages and hamlets and acts as the community's 'focal point'. It aims to 'develop the potential of every child in a happy, caring, stimulating environment'. It is organised into two classes (infants and juniors) and there is also a playgroup for the under fives, which meets twice a week. The curriculum is based on the core subjects of the national curriculum. A 'strong' parent-teacher association raises funds for the school and organises social events. The school recently won a Healthy School award and the Allerdale Environment award. Pupils have found success in various sports, winning five trophies in 1999 in local sporting events, and several children have won medals for cross-country running. Pupils were chosen by the National Trust to meet Prince Charles during his visit to Grasmere in 1999.
